Supplier Quality Engineer - located in Montgomery, AL

Position Summary

The Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) is responsible for developing assigned suppliers in the areas of Quality, Delivery, Cost and Service. This person is responsible for investigating, analyzing and collaborating with suppliers and the Hager Asia Supply Chain team to correct problems in quality, production, etc.

The SQE is responsible for providing quality support to manufacturing operations, ensuring the components purchased from suppliers meet engineering requirements. This position is responsible for evaluating and auditing capabilities of suppliers in conjunction with other team members with the responsibility for approving or rejecting for use.

This role will participate in the implementation of supply chain strategies. This position will drive quality improvements and ensure organizational goals for performance are met. The individual will work with cross functional teams to implement process improvements and solve day to day problems for internal customers and focus on improving incoming product quality.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Perform supplier process reviews and supplier quality systems surveys. Drive and champion quality improvement efforts internally & externally.
  2. Assist in the implementation of the Supplier Quality Manual and Supplier Scorecard process
  3. Review and manage Supplier PPAP Submissions.
  4. Work with Supply Chain staff to make decisions relevant to product sourcing. Work with the team to evaluate new suppliers.
  5. Supplier Corrective Action Reports (SCARs)
    a. Process SCARs as necessary and conduct claim reviews with purchasing
    b. Follow up with Hager Asia SQE, Buyers & Suppliers on completion of open SCARs
    c. Validate effective implementation of corrective actions indicated on SCARs with Product Engineers and Hager Asia SQE
  6.  Collaborate with the Hager Asia Supply Chain team with international suppliers
    a. Assist in implementation of the SCAR process
    b. Prepare and communicate data related to customer quality issues
  7. Conduct supplier audits to implement Corrective Action Plans and Supplier Quality Systems
  8. Inspect purchased products in accordance with established procedures at the Supplier site and Hager facilities. Inspect product for correct specifications based on blueprints and bill of materials to verify quantity, dimensions, contents and finishes. Document inspection results and if product is deemed unacceptable, contact quality manager and work to develop a resolution to the issue.
  9. Provide assistance and support as needed in the New Product Development process
  10. Participate in internal corrective action reporting projects.
  11. Read and interpret drawings and assist with corrections / updates.
  12. Perform data collection, computer input, analysis and output using Microsoft Office products.
  13. Assist with engineering change orders (ECO’s), and implementing quality procedures, process controls etc.
  14. Conduct test procedures as developed by engineering or quality staff.
  15. Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
Position Qualification Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Engineering, Quality, Business or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Quality Certification or specialized quality training is preferred.

Experience: Three or more years of quality experience or experience performing any of the above job functions in a manufacturing environment prior to entry into this position.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability: Requires ability to read drawings and use precision measuring equipment in imperial and metric units. The ability to read, write and do intermediate math with the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form along with the ability to deal with problems involving several variables in or from standardized situations. Must have excellent computer skills and be able to operate software programs used by Hager.

Machines/Tools/Equipment/Work Aids: Which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.
  • Computer, Printer, Fax, and Copier.
  • Requires extensive computer proficiency with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Power Point. Minitab is a plus.
  • Calipers, micrometer, hard gauging, height gauge, and other measurement tools as assigned
  • Optical comparator, colorimeter, gloss meter, adhesion test
  • Hand truck ability required, reach truck, order picker or forklift will be required as/if needed and assigned.
Licenses Required: Valid driver’s license. Ability to obtain appropriate passports and work visa’s necessary for international travel.

Physical Activities/Demands: Physical activities that are commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job which requires the ability to stand, sit, walk, reach, push, pull, grasp, talk, hear, and see. The employee is required to lift 25 to 60 pounds occasionally, and/or 5 to 25 pounds frequently and/or 5 pounds constantly from floor to waist and move a distance of 5 to 10 feet. Maintain a level state of alertness while performing this job.
Travel: This position requires the ability to travel up to 50% of the time, both domestic and international.
